Complementary Interventions

Compassion's core programs, while wide-ranging, cannot tackle all the obstacles to healthy development in the lives of Compassion-assisted children. That's why Compassion's Complementary Interventions activities also play a significant role in a child's development, by complementing the Child Survival, Child Sponsorship and Leadership Development programs when necessary.

One example of how Complementary Interventions ensure children get the best chance to rise above poverty is Compassion's AIDS Initiative.

Working in conjunction with the Child Survival Program, the AIDS Initiative provides medical intervention during child birth to mothers who are HIV positive. This exponentially increases the chances for children to be born HIV-free. In all three of the Child Development Model's core programs, AIDS interventions are available for children as well as caregivers and siblings. This enables the child's family to stay intact, allowing the child to grow and learn in a safe and trusting environment. In addition, Compassion provides a means of prevention, through education and testing — resources that are also available to young adults in the Leadership Development Program.

Compassion's Complementary Interventions activities address a wide range of challenges including:

  • disaster relief
  • family income-generating activities
  • additional medical and nutritional assistance
  • the provision of age-appropriate and language-specific Bibles to Compassion-assisted children
  • malaria education and prevention, including distribution of mosquito nets
  • assistance to registered children waiting to be sponsored
  • AIDS education, prevention, treatment and support
  • microenterprise support
  • access to clean water
  • assistance to orphans and highly vulnerable children

Together with Compassion's holistic child development programs — Child Survival, Child Sponsorship and Leadership Development — these critical activities help eradicate the debilitating effects of poverty in our world so that children have the opportunity to flourish and fulfill their God-given potential.
